Stone room

One of the most famous stone rooms ever built was located, until a few years ago, in the Town House Studios, in London, originally owned by Richard Branson’s Virgin Records. Designed by Philip Newell, in the early 1980s, few musicians found it immediately useful and, most of the time, it ended up being a kind of instrument or transport crates storage space. It was at a time when Phil Collins, from Genesis, was recording his first solo album, that the musician decided to set up his drums in this room to be able to rehearse some of the songs to be recorded. Suddenly, everyone realised that the sound of the drums, reflected by the stone walls, added a color to the instrument, totally different from the usual “box” type rooms, which with their excessively dead acoustics, ended up considerably diminishing the natural harmonics of the drums and snare. “In the air tonight” was one of the biggest hits of all time on the sales charts, thanks, in large part, to the innovative sound of the drums. Many wondered what effect had they, artificially, added to the recording but, in reality, it was an acoustic phenomenon used in a very creative way. Our Stone-Room has a diaphragmatic ceiling that moves with low frequencies, working as an absorption trap for them. The walls are covered with a layer of stone between 8 and 10 cm, which forms a kind of diffuser of large dimensions and with quite an irregular geometry. Like the Studio-Room, the Stone-Room communicates visually with the outside through an acoustically and thermally insulated window. The room has a supply ventilation system with variable speed. The Stone-Room is interconnected with the Studio-Room and with the Control-room, making it possible to operate guitar or bass amplifiers from them, or send instrument or audio signals.
